Prosser Farmers Market Wins Grant Award

Credit, Debit & Quest EBT Accepted at Market

Prosser Farmers' Market successfully completed a grant application for the WSU Farmers Market Wireless Technology Project. This project is funded by the WA State Dept. of Agriculture through the USDA Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. The purpose of the grant is to develop the technological capacity of WA farmers markets by allowing shoppers to pay with credit/debit cards or use SNAP (food stamp) benefits to maximize sales and expand consumer access to fresh market specialty crops. Data collected by market managers at each market, will allow WSU to evaluate the overall economic impact to specialty crop growers selling at markets with credit/debit/SNAP (food stamp) machines.

Our market will receive a wireless device set up to accept credit/debit/SNAP food stamp cards, wooden tokens to be distributed for the amount charged, signage and media materials, as well as consulting services to help implement the program. Value of the grant award is estimated at $1,500 for equipment, marketing materials and support training.

Open 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon and located in the Prosser City Park, 7th Street & Sommers Avenue, the Market is a lovely place to spend the morning.

"Agriculture is the cornerstone of Washington's economy," states Governor Christine Gregoire. "Farmers markets provide a unique opportunity to support our local growers, purchase fresh, healthy produce, and at the same time, get out and enjoy your local community."

The number of markets in Washington has more than doubled from a decade ago, increasing from 60 in 1998 to more than 125 sites in operation today. Statewide, farmers markets reported $55 million sales in 2007, up from $38 million in 2006. Most of these dollars go directly to Washington family farmers.
